146;93: Life term to 2 for planting bomb, lobbing grenade

The Special TADA court on Tuesday sentenced Imtiaz Ghavate and Nasim Barmare to life imprisonment in the 1993 serial blasts case. Ghavate was found guilty of planting a bomb and Barmare was convicted for lobbing a hand-grenade.

Both Ghavate and Barmare were spared the death penalty as the court observed that the bomb did not explode and the grenade did not cause much damage or loss of life. Barmare had lobbed a hand-grenade into the Sahar airport at Bay number 54 where aircraft were parked.

Ghavate was convicted for being part of the conspiracy and attempting to cause an explosion by parking an RDX-laden scooter fitted with a timer device on Dhanji street. The bomb did not explode as the detonator8217;s pin got stuck in the RDX, the court observed. 8220;The scooter was planted in a busy street. In the event of an explosion, it would have caused deaths and injuries to people in the vicinity,8221; said Judge P D Kode.

Sentencing Ghavate to rigorous life imprisonment on two counts and a fine of Rs 2.77 lakh, Judge Kode said: 8220;It was the grace of God that explosion didn8217;t take place.8221;

The judge took into consideration the fact Ghavate 8220;is HIV positive8221;.

Ghavate was also convicted for being part of the landing of arms and ammunition that took place in Shekhadi and the transportation of the contraband to Mumbai and for attempt to murder.

Apart from handing out life imprisonment to Barmare, Judge Kode also fined Rs 2.3 lakh. Barmare was also convicted for acquiring arms and ammunition, receiving training from Pakistan, attending the pre-blast meetings and filling motor vehicles with RDX, a day before the blasts. He was also convicted for attempt to murder. After the sentencing, Barmare said: Saab mulakat?
