The Board of Control for Cricket in India BCCI has advised British architects to visit Burlton Park to develop it as a premier sports hub, said Local Government Minister Manoranjan Kalia on Friday.
He said the Burlton Park in Jalandhar will be a centre of sports with composite facilities not only for cricket and hockey, but also for an international-level swimming pool, squash court and tennis courts.
After detailed discussions with the Punjab Cricket Association and the BCCI, it has been decided to get the master plan and layout details of the park executed with the assistance of British architects.
The British architects would visit Jalandhar on Saturday, said Kalia.
A spokesman said the Burlton Park is located in 51.5 acres and the proposal is to use 26 acres for cricket, nine acres for hockey and 2.5 acres for a swimming pool.
To raise resources for the sports complex, it is also proposed to build 70 shops-cum-offices in the park, which would be sold specifically to sports goods manufactures including Nike, Adidas, Reebok and fast food companies, including McDonalds, KFC and Pizza Hut, the minister said.
He added that the BCCI has proposed that the stadium be made with international standards so that top-class cricket matches in Punjab could be played at three venues, including Mohali, Jalandhar and Bathinda.
