PUNE, May 22: In a rather strange action by the civic department of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation PCMC, cement railings along the footpath behind Jijamata hospital in Pimpri camp have been removed ostensibly to carry out the daily road and drainage cleaning works.

As many as 50 cement railings, along the road to the Sadhu Vaswani garden which have been removed, are all in good condition. The action carried out by the PCMC B divisional office, raised doubts over the purpose behind the removal of the railings. The action also puzzled city engineer S D Garade.

When contacted, Garade admitted that he was perplexed by the action and he also initially sought to make a complaint with the police suspecting that the railings may have been removed by some anti-social elements. However, further enquires by him revealed that the cement railings had been removed by the civic department itself. He however could not specify the reason why they had been removed.

An executive engineer of the Pimpri-Chinchwad divisional office when contacted claimed that the orders to remove the footpath railings had been issued by the Municipal Commissioner. He said that the civic department found it difficult to carry out the daily work of cleaning the road and drainage as the people engaged in throwing the unused construction material on the footpath itself. The dumping of the construction material blocked the drainage lines, he said. The removal of the railings will help in carrying out the daily cleaning of the drainage. The citizens, he said, will also stop the dumping of the construction material along the footpath. The foothpath is hardly used by any body as the area is isolated. The cement railings on the main road will not be removed, he added.
