As the long game got over, the two young state-mates, opponents for today, were in contrasting moods.
Fuming at himself, Tamil Nadu GM Deepan Chakkravarthy was regretful of missing the chance to climb up the scoreboard after errors at crucial moments cost him, while Adhiban B made the most of his opportunities and maintained his position at the top going into the final day of the Parsvnath International chess tournament. After draws at all the other top tables, the results after the ninth and penultimate round leave a four-way tie at the top.
But even as the scoreboard positions started getting clearer, there was a period of confusion at the tournament today. With most of the games still on, the lights at the Indira Gandhi Stadium suddenly went off. Players were asked to leave their boards as the organisers tried to arrange for emergency lighting. Then after a period of around 10 minutes, the electricity was restored and the players got back to business.
Earlier, top-seed Alexei Dreev offered youngster Rohit G, in top form at the tournament, a draw after 26 moves. Egypt8217;s Ahmad Adly and and Ziaur Rahman also played out one.
That leaves Dreev, Adly, Rohit and Adhiban at top with 7.5 points each. The chasing pack has 13 names. The 14-year-old Adhiban, who is likely to get his first IM norm after this result, said it was Chakkravarthy8217;s errors in the middle-game that helped him get a foothold and he held onto his advantage.
