MUMBAI, AUGUST 2: Ghatkopar police arrested four members of the Nadar family this morning in connection with the death of their 29-year-old daughter-in-law, who allegedly immolated herself late last month.

According to the police, the family members were arrested on the basis of recorded statements made by the victim’s parents who arrived from Chennai on Sunday afternoon. Meena’s parents claim that her in-laws were torturing Meena for money. “They tried to pressurise us into paying them a few thousand rupees for her safety,” her parents told the police.

Those arrested are husband Shekar Nadar, brother Francis, mother-in-law Annapurna and sister-in-law Pramila. They have been charged with causing Meena’s death by torture, sources added.

The incident dates back to July 27, when Meena is believed to have doused five-year-old son Sam, three-year-old Jack and 10 month-old Vinila with kerosene before setting herself ablaze at their residence at the S K Kapadia Chawl in Ghatkopar.

The incident took placeat around 10.30 am when Meena was alone with her children. Her husband was allegedly at the temple, while her mother-in-law Annapurna was at the market.
