SOLAN, June 23: One of the Army's highest decorated battalion, 3 Jat, commemorated its 175th Raising Day with great fanfare here today. A cultural programme, barakhana and a light and sound show featuring the battalion's history and achievements marked the occasion.War widows were also honoured on the occasion. A UTI policy amounting to Rs 1.5 lakh on maturing, was also taken out in the name of the youngest daughter of a battalion trooper, Nk Raj Kumar, who was killed in Kashmir. The certificate was handed over to his widow Kamla Devi.Greeting all ranks while addressing a special sainik sammalem, the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Western Command, Lt Gen H.B. Kala said that the history and achievements of the battalion was exemplary in the Army.Lt Gen Kala, who is also the Colonel of the Jat Regiment, reiterated that the Jat regiment had the distinction of having the best Regimental Centre in the Central Command and had also excelled in sports and adventure.The Army Commander also presented a memento to the battalion, which was received by the General Officer Commanding, Panther Division, Maj Gen Avtar Singh and the battalion's Commanding Officer, Col A.V. Garde.Welfare measures were discussed by the president AWWA (Regional), Kusum Kala with ladies of the station. Sewing machines were also presented to widows. Raised on June 23, 1823 by Lt Col Mossem Boyed, the battalion has nine Battle Honours, one Theatre Honour and 106 assorted decorations, including one Victoria Cross, One George Cross and four Mahavir Chakras to its credit.
