Colonel Rajesh Mishra, defence spokesman at Imphal, said over the telephone that the explosion went off with a defeaning sound near a camp of the Assam Rifles which also had a barrack close by. The locality also has a training centre of the Manipur State Police Commando Force.
Meanwhile, sources said 11 persons were killed on the spot, while two others succumbed to injuries on way to the hospital. There was, however, no confirmation of death of any security personnel. The toll is likely to go up.
The bomb was suspected to have been kept in a two-wheeler. Some security personnel might be among the injured. The identities of those killed were yet to be ascertained. Some of the bodies were mutilated beyond recognition, sources said.
Most of the injured were rushed to the Regional Institute of Medical Sciences in Imphal. The Government has announced a red alert in Imphal and neighbouring areas after the explosion. It was only two days ago that suspected militants had lobed a bomb at Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh8217;s residence at Babupara in the heart of the city.
Though no group has so far claimed responsibility for the blast, the needle of suspicion was pointed towards Prepak militants, the Army official said.
