BANUR, Sept 29: A total of 1,170 driving licences were issued on the spot at a licensing camp organised by the Patiala District Transport Office here yesterday.

District Transport Officer Avtar Chand Sharma said the idea behind the spot licensing scheme was to eliminate middlemen who fleeced innocent licence-seekers as also to bring to an end the cumbersome procedure of making rounds of the District Transport Office.

At the seventh such camp in this series being organised in important towns of the district, a record of sorts was set with such a large number of licences being issued on a single day. Among the licences issued yesterday were nine for heavy transport vehicles, 243 for light transport vehicles, 22 for tractors and 896 for scooters and cars. Earlier, similar camps have already been organised at Patiala, Nabha, Samana, Patran, Dera Bassi and Banur.

Speaking on the occasion, Sharma made an impassioned plea for introduction of traffic safety as a subject at the school level. quot;Educating children about road safety would be of great help as they could goad their parents to be conversant with and follow traffic rules, quot; he said.
