Infosys founder and IT billionaire Narayana Murthy has sparked a controversy online after remarking that the youth must consider working 70 hours a week. In a recent podcast, Murthy said that India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world, and to ensure the country’s development, the youth must volunteer to work at least 70 hours a week.
While Murthy’s ask to youngsters has been supported by many other CEOs, science doesn’t support his claim. Time and again, Studies have shown that productivity declines significantly after 50 hours of work per week and takes a nosedive after 55 hours. Moreover, not taking at least one full day off each week can lead to a decrease in overall hourly output.
Another key question remains whether a 70-hour work week, which translates to nearly 12 hours of work for six days a week, is viable in terms of health and fitness. While it is possible to work 70 hours a week, doctors urge that it can have significant implications for a person’s health, well-being and work-life balance.
“Some individuals may temporarily have to work such long hours due to certain circumstances or job demands, but it is generally not sustainable in the long run, and can lead to negative consequences,” Dr Jyoti Kapoor, founder-director and senior psychiatrist, Manasthali told indianexpress.com.
Long work hours can result in burnout, diminished job satisfaction, and a strained work-life equilibrium, said Dr Honey Savla, internal medicine consultant, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central. “Extended working hours can lead to physical and mental fatigue, reduced family time, and hinder the body’s natural recovery process that necessitates rest.”
Gayatri Mehra, a counselling psychologist, explained the multifaceted implications a 70-hour work week may have on an individual’s health, which includes:
*Increased risk of cardiovascular diseases
*Obesity as people resort to fast food and irregular meal timings
*Musculoskeletal issues due to prolonged sedentary behaviour and limited time for exercise
*Mental health issues such as elevated stress levels, anxiety and depression
*Emotional exhaustion, detachment and diminished sense of accomplishment
*Sleep disturbances
While most people may not have experienced a full 70-hour workweek, some may have overworked themselves to meet deadlines. In such a scenario, Dr Ankita Priydarshini, consultant psychiatrist & behavioural medicine and founder & clinical head, Thriving Minds, Dehradun, and Dr Samrat Shah, consultant internist at Bhatia Hospital, Mumbai, suggested following some practical tips:
*Prioritise self-care: Make sure to set aside time for activities that help you relax and recharge, such as exercise, hobbies, and spending time with loved ones.
*Get enough sleep: Aim for at least 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night to ensure your body and mind have time to rest and recover.
*Take breaks: Incorporate short breaks throughout the day to give your mind a chance to rest and recharge. Even a few minutes of stretching or deep breathing can make a difference.
*Maintain a healthy lifestyle: Eat nutritious meals, stay hydrated, and try to incorporate physical activity into your routine to support your overall well-being.
*Set boundaries: Communicate your limits and expectations with your employer or colleagues to ensure a healthy work-life balance. Learn to say no when necessary and delegate tasks when possible.
*Regular health check-ups: Regular health check-ups and monitoring of stress levels can aid in early detection of potential health issues.
*Seek support: Nurturing a robust support network, including friends, family, or professional counselors, can provide crucial emotional support.
Ultimately, understanding one’s limits and recognising the importance of a healthy work-life balance is essential for long-term well-being and sustainable productivity. Dr Austin Fernandes, psychiatrist, Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital, Powai recommends following the ‘9-8-7 Rule’:
*9 hours of work
*8 hours of recreation or rest
*7 hours of sleep
“This rule can improve productivity and enhance general well-being, but it is also important to remember that this is for general guidance and can vary as per individual’s circumstances,” he concluded.
