Crumbling in parts, paint peeling off the once bright walls that now wear scribbles by children, and the sprawling Victorian House in North London found an admirer in Anna Fox. Before she left 41 Hewitt Road, the British photographer documented her former home, turning it into an acclaimed set of work. The collection is now travelling to India, showcased as part of an exhibition, “Home and Away”, which questions the idea of home.
“We take a look at what eight photographers think about home and away from home. Without a deliberate bias, it’s interesting that the women are looking inwards to a domestic environment and men look outside; either away or strangers in their own homes,” says Sunil Gupta. The curator of the exhibition is also showcasing his 2014 Stockwell series that documents his London neighbourhood and through the frames his life and concerns.
The meaning of home is directly addressed by Anusha Yadav, who photographs people in their space and asks them to describe it. The subjects vary from a fashion intern, who dreams of having her own home to a filmmaker, who describes home as “refuge and fantasy”.
“This is the space women unquestionably belong to; the home, that is not a mere four-walled entity. It is their pride, comfort, desires, love and personality on display,” says Yadav.
The exhibition at Vadehra Art Gallery, D-53, Defence Colony, is on till October 11. Contact: 24622545
