Mother’s Day 2023 in India Date: A day that celebrates motherhood and the unconditional love of mothers, Mother’s Day is an important occasion observed in India and across the world. Mother’s Day, also known as Mothering Sunday (as per early Christian traditions), is a holiday that honours a family’s or an individual’s mother, as well as maternal bonding and the powerful stature of mothers in society. It usually falls on the second Sunday of May. This year, it falls on May 14.

It is believed that the ancient Greeks and Romans, who held festivals in honour of the mother goddesses Rhea and Cybele, may have recognised and appreciated mothers for their unwavering contribution to society.

However, the modern version is believed to have begun in the United States in 1907 when Anna Jarvis hosted the first Mother’s Day worship service in memory of her late mother, Ann Jarvis. Anna was inspired by her mother’s tireless work as a community health advocate and began campaigning for a national day of recognition for mothers in the early 1,900s.

History has it that in 1914, her efforts borne fruits when the 28th President of the United States of America, Woodrow Wilson, signed a proclamation designating the second Sunday in May as Mother’s Day. The day became an official holiday in the United States. The idea quickly gained popularity in other parts of the world including in India.

Mother’s Day is a day to show appreciation for mothers and mother-like figures by giving them gifts, cards, and flowers. It is also a time for families to gather and celebrate the day.

It is also a day to raise awareness about maternal well-being. The day is considered an opportunity to raise awareness about the challenges that mothers face in raising their children, and the need for adequate support and resources to help them in their journey.

Although there is no set rule, Mother’s Day is considered an expression of affection in which everyone strives to demonstrate their love for their mother or mother-like figures in their lives.
