After the grand and highly anticipated coronation of King Charles III and Queen Camilla, which took place with great pomp and ceremony just last month, the British royal family is now eagerly preparing for yet another extraordinary celebration. On Saturday, King Charles III‘s first official birthday parade, famously known as Trooping the Colour, is all set to take center stage. Although the monarch’s actual birth date is November 14, June 17 will serve as his designated official birthday, in adherence to the longstanding tradition upheld by the royal family throughout the years.
The event, which has marked the official birthday of the British Sovereign for more than 260 years, will now witness its first occurrence under the reign of King Charles following the passing of Queen Elizabeth II in September 2022. Throughout her remarkable 70-year tenure on the throne, Trooping the Colour was famously referred to as the Queen’s Birthday Parade.
Marking a major change to the parade as compared to the final years of Queen Elizabeth’s birthday celebrations, King Charles will also be seen riding a horse in the procession. Several other amendments, including Kate Middleton and Camilla’s new roles, a change in the uniform, new music, etc, are also expected at this year’s Trooping the Colour.
But, what is this ceremony all about?
To celebrate the official birthday of the reigning British monarch, over 1400 parading soldiers, 200 horses and 400 musicians come together each June in a great display of military precision, horsemanship and fanfare. Additionally, the streets could be seen lined with crowds waving the flags as the parade moves from Buckingham Palace and down The Mall to the Horse Guard’s Parade, alongside Members of the Royal Family on horseback and in carriages.
The spectacular display concluded with an RAF fly-past which the members of the royal family witnessed from the Buckingham Palace balcony, making for a memorable picture each year.
According to royal.uk, “Once the Sovereign has arrived at Horse Guard’s Parade in Whitehall, they are greeted by a Royal salute and carry out an inspection of the troops, who are fully trained and operational soldiers wearing the ceremonial uniform of red tunics and bearskin hats. After the military bands have performed, the escorted Regimental Colour, or flag, is processed down the ranks of soldiers. Over one hundred words of command are used by the Officer in Command of the Parade to direct the several hundred soldiers.”
“Once the Foot Guards have marched past the Sovereign, they ride back to Buckingham Palace at the head of the soldiers, before taking the salute again at the Palace from a dais,” it added.
The reigning monarch is then joined by other Members of the Royal Family on the balcony at Buckingham Palace to watch a fly-past by the Royal Air Force. “A 41-gun salute is also fired in Green Park to mark the occasion.”
