MS Dhoni on honesty (Source: Namita Thapar/MS Dhoni/Instagram)MS Dhoni needs no introduction, on and off the field. The former caption of IPL team Chennai Super Kings is known for his cool temperament and calm demeanour even in the most pressing situations — qualities entrepreneurs must also have to excel. So, it was natural for Shark Tank India’s Namita Thapar to quiz the batsman about what keeps him “so so cool”.
“For me, honesty is key — it is an important characteristic. If I am honest, I can understand my and as well as my team’s shortcomings. Honesty always helps you improve. It is a very simple rule,” shared Dhoni, 42, told Thapar
He added, “I don’t tell or ask youngsters anything big. I just tell them to be honest with themselves and the people they are close to and look up to when taking suggestions or advice. That’s because if you present them with a wrong problem, you will always get the wrong solution.”
So, is honesty the best policy?
Despite rapid technology advancements and shifting societal norms, honesty remains a very strong and founding characteristic trait in human beings, said Arouba Kabir, emotional and mental health professional, founder, Enso Wellness, adding that being honest with oneself makes one a reliable and credible person.
“Whether in personal relationships or business dealings, being honest ensures that we have fruitful productive relationships. Being honest with ourselves and the outside world brings mental and emotional peace which helps one feel complete, enhances self-trust, and also helps a person connect better with the world without any anxiety or trust issues,” said Arouba.
Arouba Kabir shares the following tips.
Expand the horizon of acceptance
Accept that each human being is unique and has been brought up in different environments, which shape their personalities. So what might seem wrong to me, might seem right to somebody else. This acceptance that everybody has their own way of doing things helps expand your horizon of acceptance and helps you be honest with your reality.

Pause and reflect
Before reacting, take a moment to pause and reflect. Consider the potential long-term repercussions of dishonesty versus the benefits of maintaining integrity.
Communicate clearly
Honesty doesn’t mean harshness. Communicate your truth with empathy and clarity, considering the feelings and perspectives of others.
Seek support
If you’re struggling to remain honest in a difficult situation, seek advice or support from trusted friends, mentors, colleagues or a professional therapist. They can provide perspective and help you navigate the situation.
Be transparent
In professional settings, transparency can be particularly powerful. If you’ve made a mistake or face a challenging circumstance, openly communicate about it. This can build trust and demonstrate your commitment to integrity.
Practice self-compassion
Recognise that being honest, especially in unfavourable situations, can be challenging. Practice self-compassion and remind yourself that integrity is a strength, not a weakness.
