Mouth breathing can be particularly harmful for children (Source: Getty Images) Do you drool all over your pillow in your sleep? This is a major sign that you are a mouth breather. Mouth breathing, as opposed to nasal breathing, can have various negative effects on your health and facial development, according to Dr MD Kareemullah Khan, ENT Surgeon, CARE Hospitals.
Other than causing a reduction in your oxygen uptake, causing dryness in mouth and throat, respiratory issues and sleep disruption, it can also bring out dental issues and change the shape of your face in the long run.
Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, explained that chronic mouth breathers may have facial distortion, which manifests as an elongated face, droopy eyes with dark circles and pigmentation under the eyes, narrow nostrils, pursed dry lips, forward open bite and even a narrow upper lip.
Here are some issues mouth breathing can cause, in terms of your face, as explained by the experts.
Potential dental and orthodontic issues
Mouth breathing can contribute to dental problems such as malocclusion, crooked teeth, and improper jaw development. It can also lead to a higher incidence of cavities, gum disease, and misalignment of teeth. Proper dental care, including regular check-ups and good oral hygiene, can help mitigate these issues.
Facial structure changes
Prolonged mouth breathing, especially during childhood, can lead to alterations in facial development. Chronic mouth breathing in children may result in an elongated face, narrow arches in the roof of the mouth, and changes in the positioning of the lips and tongue.
According to Dr Khan, orthodontic treatment, such as braces or other dental appliances, can be used to address the changes in facial and dental structure caused by mouth breathing. Early orthodontic evaluation and intervention can help guide facial growth in a more favourable direction.
