Winters can be challenging for our furry companions, just as they are for us. With the mercury dropping, even routine showers can feel like herculean tasks, pushing us towards layering up and reaching for heavy-duty perfumes. But how does the cold affect our pets’ bathing routines? To find out, Indianexpress.com consulted experts for advice on maintaining pet hygiene during the colder months.

Dr Rachana from East Coast Pet Hospital, Chennai, recommended bathing dogs once a month or only when absolutely necessary during winter. “Cold weather tends to dry out their skin, making frequent baths undesirable. Regular brushing is a better way to keep them clean and maintain their coat’s health,” she said. She also cautioned that excessive bathing strips natural oils from their skin, leading to dryness, itchiness, and flakiness, causing discomfort for pets.

Mahendra Grover, companion animal business unit head, SAVAVET, advised bathing your pets fortnightly or to opt for a weekly dry bath to maintain their hygiene while preserving their skin health. “Unlike humans, pets have thinner skin, which makes them more prone to losing their protective coating,” he said.

According to J S Ramakrishna, business head at Carniwel, excessive bathing can weaken a pet’s natural defense against cold weather. “If the pet’s skin becomes too dry or the fur loses its insulating properties, it may become more susceptible to colds or skin infections. In winter, regions like Dehradun and Mumbai are particularly prone to dampness, and excessive bathing can make pets vulnerable to chilly winds and weather conditions,” he said.

Monitor the temperature: Avoid walking your dog during extremely cold or windy conditions.

Layer up: Small or short-haired breeds may benefit from dog coats or sweaters during short walks.

Post-walk care: Wipe paws with a damp towel to remove ice melt residue after outdoor activities.

Provide warmth: Ensure access to a cosy, warm bed indoors.
