As the monsoon season brings a surge in humidity and fluctuating temperatures, our immune systems often face new challenges. Many people turn to traditional remedies to bolster their defenses against common seasonal ailments, with chyawanprash being a popular choice.

Renowned for its blend of herbs and natural ingredients, chyawanprash is believed to boost immunity and protect against infections. But, how valid is this claim?

Key ingredients in chyawanprash that contribute to boosting immunity in the monsoon season

Dr Pradeep Shrivastava, ayurvedic expert, Krishna’s Herbal and Ayurveda, tells indianexpress.com, “Chyawanprash contains over 55 herbs including amla, vanshlochan, and ghee. It plays an important role in promoting health from within, especially during the monsoon season. Amla, rich in Vitamin C, strengthens immunity, while vanshlochan detoxifies the body. Ghee on the other hand enhances nutrient absorption. Together, they shield against monsoon-related infections by boosting the immune system.”

The body’s ability to fight off monsoon season infections with regular consumption

Taking chyawanprash regularly can act as a potent shield for the human body, says Dr Shrivastava. It supercharges the body’s natural immunity which effectively helps it to fight off the monsoon season infections and viruses.

He adds, “Compared to other natural remedies, it fortifies the body’s resistance and power to counter bacteria, ensuring robust protection against seasonal diseases.”

How should chyawanprash be consumed to maximise its immune-boosting effects?

To maximise the immune-boosting benefits of chyawanprash during the monsoon, according to Dr Shrivastava, adults are advised to take 1 teaspoonful (approximately 15g) twice daily, while children aged 3 to 12 years should take 0.5 teaspoonfuls (approximately 7g) twice daily.

For optimal absorption and effectiveness, it is best consumed with warm milk, though it can also be taken directly, he confirms. This practice not only enhances immunity but also helps the body combat seasonal infections, ensuring overall health and vitality during the rainy season.

Potential side effects or considerations for certain individuals

Dr Shrivastava assures, “Chyawanprash generally offers side benefits, not side effects, but people with allergies should carefully read the ingredient list on the pack.”

Those with specific health conditions, such as diabetes or high blood pressure, should consult a healthcare professional before consumption. This ensures that the immune-boosting benefits are tailored to individual needs, particularly during the monsoon season.
