Who doesn’t know about the Girl Boss? Ushered in by Sophia Amoruso, a buzzword that defined the ambitions of millennial women. Well, move over girl boss because a new trend is in town, the snail girl era, and it is here to stay.

The girl boss is no longer regarded as a feminist emblem, and Gen Z is ushering in the era of the “snail girl” — a social media trend in which women value a calmer life of happiness and self-care above hustle culture and overworking.

Sienna Ludbey invented the term “snail girl” in a September piece for Fashion Journal titled “‘Snail girl era’: Why I’m slowing down and choosing to be happy rather than busy.” Ludbey is a designer and the owner of Hello Sisi, an outlet where she sells handmade bags and accessories.

“‘Hot take for the week, my inner girl boss is dead and my ‘snail girl’ era has begun,'” Ludbey wrote.

For years, the ‘girlboss’ character demanded that women portray an image of success and hustle at all times. It put a lot of pressure on them to keep up appearances. The pandemic, on the other hand, served as a stimulus for contemplation.

Ludbey explained, “A snail girl takes her time and creates to create. The speed at which everything is put out into the world is just getting faster, but she doesn’t care. She’s running her own race, and maybe that race isn’t going anywhere but home and back to bed.”

This transition occurs as the ‘girl boss’ identity is being questioned. Young people are increasingly doubting the value of devoting their lives to business achievement as a result of office burnout.

In stark contrast, Gen Z rejects these ideas and seeks new paths to fulfillment. One such trend is the TikTok “lazy girl jobs” phenomenon, in which women find fulfillment in low-effort jobs that pay well.

The ‘snail girl’ era is currently trending on TikTok, thanks to Fashion Journal’s video sharing Ludbey’s essay. TikTokers are embracing this trend by showing their calm morning rituals and lifestyle, which includes walks in nature, cups of tea, and skincare practices.

While the snail girl lifestyle may provide immediate delight, it may also have long-term financial ramifications. Time will tell how these translate for the Gen Z.
