If you spend several waking hours perusing #skincare on your social media platforms, chances are you already know what face basting is- but to those blissfully unaware, this skincare technique may be the key to achieving a healthy glow!

Grab hold of a diaper rash cream– we know it’s weird, but trust us, and slather on a thick coat all over your face before you doze off at night. The trend has several digital creators waxing about the visible results, promising supple skin as you wash off the goop next morning.

According to Dr Gaur, face basting is a skincare trend that has recently gained popularity. It involves applying a thick layer of zinc oxide-based diaper rash cream to the face overnight.

What are its benefits?

“The thick consistency of the cream helps to lock in moisture and prevent Trans-epidermal Water Loss (TEWL).  Zinc oxide’s anti-inflammatory properties may also help reduce skin redness, irritation, and inflammation, in conditions like acne and rosacea,” said Gaur.

“It also has mild astringent properties and controls oil production.  Zinc oxide has wound healing properties. So overall, this helps to repair the skin barrier and maintain the skin’s hydration,” she added.

According to her, face basting is best suited for those with dry, sensitive or inflammatory skin, who require intensive hydration, especially in the winter months. It is also useful in patients undergoing laser treatments, as a post-procedure cream.

Zinc oxide also helps to reduce the irritation caused by topical agents like retinoids and Vitamin C serums, she added.

Who should be careful?

Gaur said that this technique should be avoided by those with acne prone skin, as the thick consistency of the zinc oxide cream can occlude the oil glands. It may also induce allergic reactions in some individuals.

“It is important to patch-test any new product and consult with a dermatologist to tailor the skincare products according to individual requirements,” she warned.
