So many home remedies are followed diligently by many. As such, it becomes extremely important to understand what is beneficial for one’s health. So, when we came across a home remedy from lifestyle educator Anjali Mukherjee that mentioned coriander seeds water can help deal with the burning sensation after urination, we decided to ask our in-house experts whether it works.

Mukherjee mentioned that coriander seeds water helps to reduce the burning urination. “Do this for 2-10 days in case of mild burning,” said Mukherjee.

Mukherjee shared that the remedy comprises soaking one tablespoon of coriander seeds overnight in about 1 and a half cups of water. “Strain the infused water the next morning,” said Mukherjee.

Dr Ashutosh Baghel, consultant urologist, andrologist, and kidney transplant surgeon, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road said that coriander seed water is like a “natural superhero that might help in fighting off urinary tract infections (UTIs)”.

Coriander seeds have something called antimicrobial properties – think of them as tiny warriors that can combat harmful bacteria. “Coriander seeds also have substances that might reduce inflammation. When you have a UTI, there’s often irritation and swelling in your urinary tract. The soothing effect of coriander seed water could help calm down this inflammation, making you feel more comfortable,” said Dr Baghel.

Additionally, there is the “flushing” effect. “Coriander seeds might work like a gentle cleaner for your urinary system. They may help in getting rid of toxins and waste, which is essential when you’re dealing with a UTI,” said Dr Baghel.

By creating an environment less conducive to bacterial proliferation, coriander seeds could contribute to the prevention or treatment of UTIs, added Dr Shobha Gupta, medical director and IVF specialist, Mother’s Lap IVF Centre New Delhi and Vrindavan. Concurred Dr Dilip Gude, senior consultant physician, Yashoda Hospitals, Hyderabad, and said that coriander seeds contain bioactive compounds, including cineole and linoleic acid, which possess antimicrobial properties. These compounds may help inhibit the growth of bacteria in the urinary tract, potentially aiding in the treatment and prevention of UTIs.

Remember, while coriander seed water might offer some relief, it’s not a substitute for proper medical treatment. “If you suspect you have a UTI, it’s crucial to consult with a healthcare professional for the right advice and treatment. Think of coriander seed water as a supportive sidekick in your journey to feel better,” said Dr Baghel.
