Mawlid History: It is said that humanity was blessed in this month by the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammad (Express Photo by Shuaib Masoodi) Eid-e-Milad 2023 Date, time, history: Eid-e-Milad-Un-Nabi is a prominent festival celebrated by Muslims across the world. Also, called Mawlid, it is the Islamic observation of the day when the Islamic Prophet Muhammad was born. It is commemorated in Rabi’ al-Awwal, the third month in the Islamic calendar.
Notably, Shia scholars of the Muslim community observe this day on the 12th day of the third month of Islamic calendar or Rabi’ al-Awwal whereas, the Sunni scholars of the society celebrate Muhammad’s birthday on 17th day of the same month.
It is believed that the Prophet had received the message of the Quran through Allah’s angel Jibril.
Legend has it that the first Muslim ruler to officially celebrate Prophet Muhammad’s birthday was Muzaffar al-Din Gökböri. The Ottomans then declared it as an official holiday in 1588, known as Mevlid Kandil.
This year, Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi will begin on the evening of Wednesday, September 27, and end on the evening of Thursday, September 28 (dates may vary).
According to IslamicFinder.org, Rabi ul Awal is the most significant month in Islamic history. It is said that humanity was blessed in this month by the birth of the Holy Prophet Mohammad.
It is believed that as the Prophet was born, he brought with him the Message of Truth, the Message of Allah, and His Oneness. This message led the people toward the path of enlightenment, helping them distinguish between what’s right and wrong.
However, in the Middle East and other surrounding countries, Muslims do not celebrate this event either on 12 Rabi ul Awal or any other day of this month because the Prophet or his Companions have never celebrated the birthday of the Prophet or any other Prophet, mentions IslamicFinder.org.
How is it celebrated?
The day is said to hold immense significance and as such families come together to remember the good deeds of Prophet Muhammad. People celebrate Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi by taking out large processions. Homes are decorated too. As such, families celebrate the day by preparing and distributing Seviyan (vermicelli in sweetened milk).
