Dhanteras 2023: Dhanteras falls on November 10 (Source: Getty Images/Thinkstock) Dhanteras falls just two days before Diwali, the festival of lights, and is considered the auspicious beginning of the Diwali festivities. People on this day believe in buying brass, silver, and gold items to bring prosperity and abundance into their lives. But many also end up buying things owing to the big discounts and sale offers. However, there are a few things you should not buy on this special day according to astrologer Pandit Jagannath Guruji to maintain the positive energy and avoid attracting negativity.
1. Iron and steel items: Iron and steel are associated with the planet Rahu, which is considered inauspicious in Vedic astrology. Purchasing items made of these metals on Dhanteras is believed to attract negative energy and hinder financial growth.
2. Sharp objects: Sharp objects like knives, scissors, or other cutting tools are considered inauspicious on Dhanteras. “They symbolise negativity, conflict, and severing ties. Bringing such objects into the home during this auspicious time can disrupt peace and harmony, hindering prosperity,” he said.
3. Oil, ghee, and butter: Avoid purchasing oil, ghee, or butter on Dhanteras, as these items are associated with the planet Rahu and are believed to attract its negative influence. According to him, purchasing these items on this auspicious day can hinder financial progress and attract obstacles.

4. Wood or wooden articles: Wood, although a natural material, is often associated with the planet Mars, which is known to possess both negative energy. It is generally recommended to refrain from purchasing articles on Dhanteras. The symbolism of wood representing growth and decay combined with the fiery and assertive nature of Mars may introduce instability and impede prosperity.
5. Crockery and utensils made of aluminum or plastic: Opt for traditional utensils made of brass, copper, or silver instead of aluminum or plastic on Dhanteras. “Aluminum is considered an unstable metal that can bring restlessness and anxiety, while plastic is not considered auspicious in Vedic astrology,” said Jagannath Guruji.
6. Gifts for others: While it’s natural to want to share the festive spirit, Dhanteras is traditionally a day to focus on bringing prosperity to your own home. “Avoid buying gifts for others on this day, as it can divert your energy away from your own financial goals and hinder your prosperity. Focusing on your financial well-being during this auspicious time is considered more beneficial in the long run,” said Jagannath Guruji.
