Children’s Day 2023 in India, History and Significance: Children’s Day is the annual celebration in the country that falls on the birthday of India’s first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, on November 14. This year, it is on a Tuesday and coincides with Govardhan Puja or the Annakuta Puja.

History and significance

The day stands for the rights of children and prioritises their needs and voices. It also raises awareness of the need for the education of children to enable them to be better citizens of the country in the coming years. Pt Nehru’s love for children was a well-known fact and could be witnessed in several public events that he participated in. He was hailed as ‘Chacha Nehru’ owing to his popularity among children. It is said that he considered them to be the future assets of the country, for whom an all-rounded education would be of importance for their career, and for the country.

Thus, Pt Nehru became a role model for many future generations. He also established the pioneer scientific institutions like the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), the Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT), the Indian Institutes of Management (IIM), and the National Institutes of Technology (NIT).

Why is Children’s Day Celebrated on November 14 in India?

Notably, Children’s Day is also known as ‘Bal Diwas’ in India.

*Its celebrations date back to 1956, when the day was observed as ‘Universal Children’s Day’ on November 20, keeping with the United Nations.

*But, after Pt Nehru died in 1964, it was decided the celebrations be moved to commemorate his birth anniversary.

*Since then, November 14 has been celebrated as Children’s Day in India even as the General Assembly-led Universal Children’s Day is celebrated on November 20.

How is it celebrated?

Children’s Day is observed in schools, where the teachers put up programmes and entertaining performances for the children. As such, it is a much-loved day for children as well as teachers as they go all out to make it memorable for each student. The children are also given books and handmade or printed cards to celebrate the occasion. Many schools also distribute free stationery to the children.
