As one of India’s largest trading partners, the EU accounted for €124 billion worth of trade in goods in 2023 or 12.2 per cent of total Indian trade. India accounted for 2.2 per cent of the EU’s total trade in goods in 2023.
The European Union (EU) has listed 102 new Indian fishery establishments from India for exports to EU member countries, the Commerce and Industry Ministry said on Tuesday. This comes after India’s seafood exports to the US are expected to take a hit due to steep 50 per cent tariffs that came into effect last month.
“The EU has listed 102 new Indian fishery establishments for export from India to EU member countries. This significant expansion reflects the growing confidence in India’s food safety and quality assurance systems and marks a major step forward in enhancing market access for Indian seafood products, especially aquaculture shrimps and Cephalopods (Squid, Cuttle fish and Octopus),” the statement said.
A senior government official said that the EU’s decision will strengthen India’s position as a trusted supplier of high-quality seafood and is expected to boost export volumes. The official said that the listing of new Indian fishery establishments will result in confidence in India’s robust official control mechanisms implemented by the Export Inspection Council (EIC).
“It will also increase exports of such items by a fifth. In FY24, India exported seafood worth $1.1 billion to the EU,” the official said.
This comes as European Commissioner for Trade Maros Sefcovic and Commissioner for Agriculture Christophe Hansen will be in Delhi this week to lead the negotiations for a free trade agreement (FTA). Talks between India and the EU have gained urgency in the light of the tariff war unleashed by the Trump administration.
