Planning a family is a big decision, and preventing pregnancy when you’re not ready is just as important. But with so much information (and misinformation) out there, it can be hard to know which birth control methods are truly effective.

One common misconception is that precum, the fluid released before ejaculation, can’t lead to pregnancy. However, experts warn that this is simply not true.

A potential sneak route for sperm

Dr Manjula Anagani, Clinical Director and HOD of CARE Vatsalya – Obstetrics & Gynecology, CARE Hospitals, Banjara Hills, Hyderabad, explained that precum, while not typically containing sperm itself, can pick up leftover sperm from the urethra after a previous ejaculation.

This means that even if a couple practices the “pull-out method” (withdrawing the penis before ejaculation), there’s still a significant risk of pregnancy. Studies by Planned Parenthood show that around 22 out of 100 couples relying solely on this method will experience an unintended pregnancy within a year, she noted.

How sperm can find its way

Dr Priyanka Suhag, Consultant, Dept of Obstetrics & Gynaecology at the CK Birla Hospital, Delhi, emphasised that full penetration isn’t always necessary for conception to occur. Sperm can travel through precum and potentially enter the vagina, even without full intercourse.

The likelihood might be lower compared to unprotected sex, but it’s still a possibility. This risk is further amplified if there was a recent ejaculation, as the precum could contain viable sperm.

The bottom line

Both Dr Anagani and Dr Suhag advise against relying solely on the pull-out method for contraception. While the chances of pregnancy with precum might be lower than with ejaculation, they are certainly not negligible. To avoid unwanted surprises, consider more reliable birth control methods like condoms, hormonal pills, or intrauterine devices (IUDs).

Birth control provides individuals and couples with the freedom to make informed decisions about their reproductive health. It allows for responsible sexual behavior, promotes healthy relationships, and ultimately empowers individuals to choose the path that best fits their life goals. A wide range of birth control methods exist, each with its own benefits and drawbacks.

Consulting with a healthcare professional is crucial to determine the most suitable option based on individual needs and medical history.
