We all desire to have healthy and glowing skin. But good skin does not equal spending thousands of rupees on topical ingredients and treatments. There are some natural and inexpensive ways to keep your skin rejuvenated and nourished — one of which was recently shared by actor Bhagyashree Dassani on Instagram as part of her ‘Tuesday Tip’ series.
“A good sleep helps remove tiredness, but because of stress or late nights your eyes can appear dull and tired. So, to get a morning glow on your face there is a simple and easy technique. Rubbing ice on your skin for 10 minutes can help you have healthy skin,” said Bhagyashree, a technique she called ‘ice-cream’.

According to the actor, doing so not only helps with reducing swelling and inflammation, but it also increases blood circulation, thereby decreasing the appearance of wrinkles and acne. She advised doing this morning skincare routine before applying moisturiser on the face.
Explaining, Dr Saurabh Shah, Dermatologist, Bhatia Hospital, Mumbai said that this technique is known as facial icing, a type of cryotherapy where the skin gets exposed to extreme cold for a short period of time. “One should also apply a layer of a good sunscreen of SPF 50+ or above after a layer of moisturiser.”
Pros of facial icing
The benefits of facial icing have become more prevalent in recent years because it is a safe, inexpensive and simple method to take care of your skin. “It helps even out the skin tone, de-puff the eyes, and reduce the signs of ageing. Its cooling and soothing properties also help reduce redness and treat sunburns. Regularly performing it will increase its effectiveness. Ice is also one of the best natural exfoliators which helps remove dead skin cells and enhances your natural glow and radiance,” Dr Shah told indianexpress.com.
However, there are a number of possible side effects associated with this procedure.
*Ice burns can occur as a result of oxygen deprivation to the surrounding tissues. To prevent this, wrap a cloth around the ice before touching your skin.
*You should not dunk your face in ice-cold water, especially if you have sensitive or dry skin as it can lead to irritation and redness.
*If you apply ice to the face for longer durations, it can cause skin damage. The skin may become red or itchy.
Adding, Dr Shah noted that while almost everyone can practice facial icing, certain people must exercise caution. These include:
*People with sensitive skin
*Those suffering from cold urticaria (hives precipitated by cold)
*Those prone to frostbite, skin rashes and other diseases like cryoglobulinemia
*Patients suffering from orolabial herpes (due to it spreading by icing)
