Architect recommends waterproof wallpapers for bathrooms: We find out if they are effective

Waterproof wallpapers help beautify your space and can be cleaned with a wet cloth. Ashutosh Pandey, co-founder of Life n Colors, explained that most waterproof wallpapers are made with primer, specialised adhesive, fiberglass fabric, and protective finishes. The slim profile enables quick renovations and can be installed directly over existing surfaces like bathroom tiles, minimising space waste.

One of the key advantages of waterproof wallpaper is its ability to add a stylish, decorative element to bathroom walls, allowing you to introduce colours, patterns, or textures that complement your design. “It’s a great alternative to traditional tiles or paint, giving your bathroom a fresh and unique look without the expense of extensive renovations and can be done in a shorter time,” said Swati Gupta, furniture designer, founder and principal designer Bluedot Design.

However, it’s important to install waterproof wallpaper correctly. Gupta said that proper wall preparation, such as using a moisture-resistant primer, and ensuring that edges are well-sealed, to maximise durability. “Avoid applying it in areas that receive direct water contact, like inside a shower, as even waterproof varieties have limits,” said Gupta.

While waterproof wallpaper is designed to withstand moisture and humidity, making it an excellent choice for bathrooms, kitchens, and laundry rooms, Pandey told indianexpress.com that even waterproof wallpapers may not last long. “Due to moisture in the space, waterproof wallpapers too tend to peel off with long-term usage,” said Pandey.

He contended, “If the wall has a seepage, wallpapers will peel off as glue behind the wallpaper leaves the surface.”

Cleaning waterproof wall paper is easy. Gupta said that you can gently clean the surface with a damp cloth or sponge with mild soapy water if required. “However, it’s important to avoid excessive soaking or using harsh cleaning products, as they might damage the wallpaper over time. Use a soft cloth to dry it after any cleaning to avoid prolonged exposure to moisture,” said Gupta.
