There are several aspects of nutritional science that need extensive study and understanding. In fact, there are so many varieties of nourishing foods that are hard to miss. One such is alfa alfa sprouts. Have you ever heard of them before? “In the world of healthy eating, alfa alfa sprouts have emerged as a nutritional powerhouse, offering an array of benefits for those seeking a wholesome and balanced lifestyle,” said Dt Vidhi Chawla, founder, Fisico Diet and Skin Clinic.
Elaborating on the various benefits, Chawla shared these sprouts are packed with essential vitamins and minerals crucial for overall well-being. They are particularly abundant in vitamins A, C, E, and K. “Vitamin A supports healthy vision and a strong immune system. Vitamin C acts as a potent antioxidant, fortifying the body’s defenses and aiding collagen production. Vitamin E protects against oxidative damage, while vitamin K contributes to blood clotting and bone health. Additionally, alfa alfa sprouts provide valuable minerals such as calcium, magnesium, and iron. Calcium promotes strong bones, magnesium supports muscle function, and iron aids in oxygen transport,” Chawla mentioned.
According to Chawla, they are also considered fibre for digestive health. “Alfa alfa sprouts are an excellent source of dietary fibre, playing a vital role in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Fibre adds bulk to the diet, promoting regular bowel movements and preventing constipation. By supporting proper digestion, alfa alfa sprouts enhance nutrient absorption and contribute to improved gut health,” Chawla told indianexpress.com.
They also help in enhanced nutrient absorption. “One of the distinctive features of alfa alfa sprouts is their high enzyme content. Enzymes act as catalysts, facilitating the breakdown of food components and enhancing nutrient bioavailability. By consuming alfa alfa sprouts, you optimise the digestion and utilisation of proteins, fats, and carbohydrates, ensuring your body efficiently harnesses the nutrients it needs for optimal health,” said Chawla.
Nutritionist Leema Mahajan took to Instagram to share that it is used in alternative medicine to help lower cholesterol, regulate periods, and reduce menopausal symptoms.
Mahajan said that the seeds need to be soaked in clean water and covered for a day. “Next day, strain the water. Clean it with fresh water. Discard extra water. Transfer this to a kitchen towel. Wrap it and place it in a dark place for 24-48 hours. You can use the sprouts after two days,” said Mahajan.

Calling them a “versatile and delightful culinary addition” to one’s diet, Chawla mentioned that they can be added to salads, sandwiches, wraps, or stir-fries. “They provide a refreshing crunch and a mild, nutty flavour, enhancing both the taste and nutritional profile of meals,” said Chawla.
Alfa alfa sprouts truly deserve their recognition as a nutritional powerhouse. “With their impressive vitamin and mineral content, fibre for digestive health, enzymes for improved nutrient absorption, and antioxidant properties, they play a significant role in promoting a healthy lifestyle,” said Chawla.
