A deficiency of vitamin B9 can lead to various health issues and complications. Also known as folate or folic, this vitamin plays a pivotal role in DNA synthesis, cell division, and one’s entire well-being. Despite its importance, not many people are aware of this deficiency that can cause symptoms like fatigue, irritability, and digestive problems. In addition, vitamin B9 also helps with mood regulation and cognitive function.

“In severe cases, a deficiency in vitamin B9 can lead to anemia, which is characterized by a decrease in red blood cells and can result in symptoms like shortness of breath and dizziness,” said Dr Shireen Furtado, senior consultant, medical and cosmetic dermatology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore.

Vitamin B9 is equally essential for the body’s ability to produce red blood cells, as well as for proper nerve function. Adding, Dr Aniket Mule, consultant internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mira Road said that B9 deficiency is also associated with cardiovascular diseases and strokes that are known to cause higher mortality and morbidity rates.

To prevent this deficiency, it is essential to consume a diet rich in folate-containing foods such as leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, legumes: chickpeas, soybeans, ladyfinger, tomatoes, beans, lentils, lettuce, oranges, and sweetcorn, said Dr Mule.

Adding, Dr Furtado said that in some cases, supplementation may be necessary, especially for pregnant women or individuals with certain medical conditions that affect nutrient absorption. Regular blood tests can also help monitor vitamin B9 levels and ensure that any deficiencies are promptly addressed through dietary changes or supplementation.
