While some may enjoy basking in the sun and making the most of the sunny mornings, for others, summer can be a challenging time to work out. As such, here’s what to keep in mind.
“While extreme heat is a no-no for a workout, you can make the best of your fitness routine by practicing your workout routine indoors and balancing your diet according to the season,” said Miten Kakaiya, fitness coach at Miten Says Fitness.
According to Kakaiya, working out in the heat can be challenging, but following a few measures can make it a safe and enjoyable experience. “Indoor workouts, drinking enough water, maintaining a proper diet, etc can help you make the most of your summer workouts while staying healthy and injury-free,” said Kakaiya as he listed some dos and don’ts.

Dos and don’ts
*Stay hydrated! It’s crucial to drink plenty of water before, during, and after a workout to avoid dehydration. Avoid sugary drinks or caffeine as they can dehydrate you quickly. Electrolyte-rich drinks can be a good option to replenish the body’s lost nutrients.
*Avoid working out during peak hours when the sun is at its strongest. The best time to exercise in the summer is early in the morning or late in the evening when the temperature is comparatively lower.
*Wear breathable and light-coloured clothing that helps in dissipating heat and sweat. “Clothing made of synthetic materials can trap sweat and heat and lead to discomfort, making it important to choose your workout attire carefully,” said Kakaiya.
*What you eat and drink during a heatwave can alter the body’s ability to regulate temperature, he stressed. “Include cooling foods like curd, amla, fennel seeds, buttermilk, etc in your diet to regulate body temperature,” he added.
*Listen to your body! “If you feel dizzy, nauseous, or have a headache, stop your workout immediately. These can be signs of heat exhaustion, which is a serious condition that requires medical attention,” he mentioned.
*Don’t push yourself too hard during a workout. High-intensity exercises can put additional stress on your body in the heat and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
*Don’t forget to warm up and cool down. Doing so helps in preparing your body for a workout and prevent muscle injuries.
*Don’t overlook the importance of rest days. “Over-exercising can increase the risk of injuries and burnout, making it crucial to take rest days and allow your body to recover,” said Kakaiya.
