Navjot Singh Sidhu's wife Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu reveals about invasive cancer diagnosis (Express photo by Rana Simranjit Singh)Navjot Singh Sidhu‘s wife, Dr Navjot Kaur Sidhu, has been diagnosed with stage 2 invasive cancer, about which she opened up on Twitter on March 22. In an emotional note to her husband, who is currently serving a sentence in jail for a road-rage incident from 34 years ago, she wrote: “He is in prison for a crime he has not committed. Forgive all those involved. Waiting for you each day outside, probably suffering more than you. As usual, trying to take your pain away, asked for sharing it. Happened to see a small growth, knew it was bad,” she wrote.

She continued, “Waited for you, seeing you were denied justice again and again. Truth is so powerful but it takes your tests time and again. KALYUG. Sorry, can’t wait for you because it’s stage 2 invasive cancer. Going under the knife today. No one is to be blamed because it’s GOD’S plan: PERFECT.”

While more details about her health are awaited, we reached out to doctors to learn more about invasive cancer and how it manifests in one’s body.
According to the National Cancer Institute, invasive cancer, also called infiltrating cancer, is when cancer cells begin destroying cellular membranes such that the cancer starts spreading to healthy tissues past its point of origin, reported medicalnewstoday.
Noting that invasive cancer is a term used for all cancers which invade beyond the first layer of an organ, Dr Anil Heroor, Director-Advanced OncoSurgery Unit, Fortis Hospitals Mumbai said that it is used for solid tumours like breast, colon, stomach etc. and is not a separate entity by itself.

“Once the tumour cross inner layer of the organ, and go outwards, they are invasive,” Dr Heroor told indianexpress.com, adding that invasive tumour cannot be prevented but it is seen that 60 per cent of cancers are linked to it.
Detection and diagnosis
As cancers are linked to lifestyle, Dr Heroor said that if someone leads a healthy life then most of the cancers could be prevented. “The other known cause is family history. But only 5 to 10 per cent of patients who have a family history get cancer,” added Dr Heroor.
There are various tests available in order to detect if a family is susceptible to cancer.
Treatment
Most of the cancers are “treated with surgery, radiation or chemotherapy, or a combination of all or two”.
“Now-a-days the chances of recovery post-surgery, radiation and chemotherapy are good because of the technology and supportive care. We now have advance surgery for many tumours, and robotic surgery for breast cancer, which gives better precision, with minimal access. So, the incision is smaller and the recovery time is extremely fast as compared to conventional surgery,” said Dr Heroor.
