Let’s take a cue and understand why the first 40 days postpartum are crucial for a new mother.

Dr Sushil D Garud (Wing Commander), consultant laparoscopic and uro-gynaecology Surgeon, Motherhood Hospitals, Kharadi, Pune, said that the first 40 days after delivery are crucial for new mothers.

“This is because this period allows the mother’s body to heal and recover from childbirth. It also helps their bodies adjust to the tremendous physical and emotional changes while delivering the baby. Mothers need quality time to heal from physical strain during labour, which may include shrinking of the uterus to its normal size and recovery from any kind of tears or stitches,” elucidated Dr Garud.

This is why new mothers are often advised by their doctors to rest enough and take care of their health.

It becomes crucial for new mothers to complete their sleep as much as possible (which may be a paradox, but when tried, it may be possible with adequate help). “This can help them retain their energy and lead to speedy recovery. Overworking during this period or performing strenuous activities can cause much more harm than you may think,” said Dr Garud.

It can not only affect the health of the mother but also the babies. “Ensure that you eat well-balanced meals, including porridges, which include plenty of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, whole grains, and proteins. This can help your body heal and produce more milk for the baby,” said Dr Garud.

Emotional support from the partner and family during this time can be helpful.
