Trainer Yasmin Karachiwala reveals how she kept Alia Bhatt focused on workout during pregnancy despite her short attention span

“I had to keep her routines engaging since Alia has a short attention span,” said Yasmin Karachiwala.

Have you ever felt like you’ve completely lost your focus after a few repetitions of a workout?

This is apparently something that actor Alia Bhatt struggles with, according to her trainer Yasmin Karachiwala. In an episode of a podcast with nutritionist Ryan Fernando, she mentioned how she had to tailor Bhatt’s workout to keep the actor engaged.

The Jigra star wanted to stay active even during her pregnancy, leading to custom workout plans designed to meet her needs. “Working with Alia was funny and beautiful. She came to me saying, ‘I’m pregnant but I need to exercise.’ We customised her workouts to keep them interesting because Alia is someone who exercises daily and doesn’t want to feel limited by her body. I had to keep her routines engaging since Alia has a short attention span — if I give her 20 repetitions, I’ve lost her by the eighth one. Her workouts need to be crisp and varied to keep her focused,” Karachiwala stated.

This comes after Bhatt revealed in an interview recently that she has Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) because of which it becomes uncomfortable for her to spend over 45 minutes on a make-up chair.

How do short attention spans affect an individual’s fitness training?

Dr Vajalla Shravani, MPT and Certified Pilates Coach at Tone 30, Bengaluru, tells indianexpress.com, “Short attention spans can make it difficult for individuals to stay mentally engaged throughout a workout, which can affect focus, form, and consistency. In fitness, especially when performing exercises that require precise movements like Pilates or weight training, losing concentration can lead to incorrect posture or inadequate repetitions, reducing the effectiveness of the workout. Additionally, the mental fatigue that comes with a short attention span can increase the risk of injury as individuals may rush through exercises without proper form.”

Key strategies for designing workout routines that cater to individuals with short attention spans

For people with shorter attention spans, workouts must be engaging and dynamic. “Incorporating HIIT (High-Intensity Interval Training) is particularly beneficial as it involves quick, intense bursts of activity followed by rest. This keeps the routine fast-paced, which helps maintain engagement,” informs Dr Shravani.

Circuit training and mixed-modality workouts (alternating between cardio, strength training, and flexibility exercises) also prevent monotony. By frequently switching between different exercises, such routines not only keep the mind engaged but also ensure the entire body is being trained.

Mental and physical benefits of exercising for someone who loses focus quickly

For individuals with short attention spans, Dr Shravani says, exercise offers both mental and physical benefits. Regular physical activity releases endorphins, which improve mood, reduce stress, and enhance focus. “Studies show that engaging in exercises like Pilates, which integrates mental focus with physical movement, can improve cognitive function over time. This is especially important for those who struggle with maintaining focus during longer activities.”

Dr Shravani highlights that for pregnant women, the benefits of staying active are twofold: physically, exercise helps maintain healthy weight, boosts circulation, and reduces discomforts like back pain, while mentally, it can improve mood, reduce anxiety, and enhance focus.

“Activities such as prenatal Pilates, which emphasises gentle stretching, breathing, and controlled movements, can help pregnant women remain engaged and attentive during workouts, despite potential hormonal shifts that might otherwise impact focus,” she concludes.
