Staying on top of your health goes beyond quitting vices and loading up on supplements. Diet plays an important role, but daily exercise is crucial if you want to stay fit and healthy in the long run.

“Did you know that not just your muscles, your organs need movement too?” says celebrity health coach Ryan Fernando, according to whom every stretch, twist, and breath you take nourishes something deep inside – be it your liver, heart, or even skin. “True wellness begins when each organ gets its share of exercise, energy, and care,” he shared in a recent post on Instagram, captioning it “exercises our organs seem to love”.

Fernando listed out a bunch of exercises that target particular organs in the body:

Movement and organ health

Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant – Internal Medicine, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, agreed with Fernando’s claims, stating that regular exercise keeps not just the body but also the internal organs healthy and active. Highlighting the importance of movement and its impact on organ health, Dr Pillai shared how each kind of exercise can change how your body functions in the long run:

  • Walking for 30 minutes every day improves heart and lung function, boosts blood circulation, and helps the digestive system function well.
  • Deep breathing exercises strengthen the lungs, improve oxygen levels in the blood, and calm the mind, which benefits the brain and heart.
  • Yoga, especially Surya Namaskar, stretches and strengthens the body, improves digestion, supports liver and kidney function, and helps in better metabolism.
  • Gentle stretching keeps the body flexible, improves blood flow to organs, and supports the nervous system.
  • Core exercises like the plank or bridge pose strengthen the abdomen, support digestion, and help internal organs stay in their proper place.
  • Dancing or light aerobics increases oxygen flow, strengthens the heart and lungs, and helps reduce stress, which keeps all organs balanced and healthy.

Dr V V Satyanarayana E, consultant, joint replacement and arthroscopy surgeon, Gleneagles Aware Hospital, L.B. Nagar, Hyderabad, added that exercises such as isometric neck and back extensions strengthen the neck and back muscles, which are essential for maintaining good posture and spinal health.

“Isometric exercises also improve muscular endurance and spinal stability. Push-ups, on the other hand, are a compound exercise that targets the chest, shoulders, triceps, and core. They improve upper body strength, enhance muscular endurance, which eventually contributes to better spinal health, posture and balance,” he told indianexpress.com.

Doing these simple exercises daily helps the organs function smoothly, improves immunity, and keeps the body strong and active.
