Did you know that Emraan Hashmi has stuck to the same diet for the last couple of years? During a recent interview with YouTuber Janice Sequeira, the Murder actor opened up about the food he eats. “I start off the day with a hearty plate of salad. That is followed by chicken keema, because it’s easy to digest. I can’t have regular chicken”, he said, reasoning that he doesn’t like the mouthfeel of chicken. I also have a bowl of mashed boiled sweet potato, he added.
“This particular diet I have been following for 2 years now,” Hashmi told Sequeira. “My cook makes the entire thing for like a week, we stock it, and then we just bifurcate through the day. When asked if his family has to deal with this, he replied jokingly: “My wife is thinking of leaving me.”
Dr Pooja Pillai, Consultant Physician and Diabetologist at Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, told indianexpress.com that for those watching their blood sugar levels, especially diabetics, having a bowl of salad before eating carbohydrates isn’t just a healthy habit but a smart blood sugar management strategy.
“Raw salads, rich in fiber, help slow down the absorption of glucose from carbohydrates, preventing sudden sugar spikes post-meal. Ideal salads include cucumber, tomatoes, carrots, bell peppers, and leafy greens like spinach or lettuce,” she explained.
Chicken meets his protein goals, and boiled sweet potatoes are loaded with dietary fibre, which helps feed our gut bacteria, aids digestion, and keeps us full for longer. They are also rich in antioxidants, such as phenolic compounds and flavonoids, which help fight free radicals, reduce inflammation, and support overall health.
Emraan Hashmi’s way of eating can be described as the monotrophic way, said gut health nutritionist Payal Kothari. According to her, a mono diet includes eating only one food for 24 to 72 hours, based on the philosophy of a minimalist way of living and eating.
“This diet is based on the idea that simplifying food combinations can ease the digestive process, allowing the body to break down and absorb nutrients efficiently. By eating just one food type, the digestive system isn’t overburdened with complex combinations, which can sometimes lead to bloating, indigestion, or other digestive discomforts,” Kothari told indianexpress.com.
The health expert shared that this is a great counter to decision fatigue, and helps save time and confusion — which might lead many to binge eat. Additionally, by focusing on whole, nutrient-dense foods like fruits, vegetables, or lean proteins, individuals can ensure they’re getting a concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals, and other essential nutrients at each meal.
“Remember to maintain your portion sizes! Too much of anything is more calories,” cautioned Kothari.
Kothari noted that most individuals fail to get all the nutrients with a monotonous diet. “It might offer short-term benefits, but it’s important to ensure a variety of nutrients over time to avoid deficiencies. A balanced approach to this diet, possibly incorporating it as a temporary cleanse or a way to reset digestion, can be beneficial when done mindfully,” said Kothari.
Several celebrities, including sportspersons and actors like Anushka Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Sunil Chhetri, have confessed to eating one type of food for months without getting bored. Here’s how you can incorporate this diet for your weight loss goals.
