Many prefer home remedies to treat (or manage) common health issues like colds and coughs. So when content creator Armen Adamjan shared a simple recipe to prevent seasonal illnesses and improve immunity, we felt like sharing it with you. According to Adamjan, all you need is an onion and some honey. “Slice it (onion) up and squish a little bit. Then, put them in an airtight container and fill it up with honey. Give it a mix and close. Let it sit for a few hours. When you feel that first sign of sickness, have a few teaspoons of this mixture,” he said on Instagram.

Does this remedy work?

The onion-honey potion has been a popular homemade remedy for sore throats, coughs, and colds for centuries, said Dr Charu Dutt Arora, infectious disease specialist, consultant physician, AmeriHealth, Asia.

Dr Sachin, BAMS, and Medical Advisor, Rasayanam concurred and added that the onion-honey potion is a well-known remedy in Ayurveda for preventing and soothing a sore throat, cough, and cold. “Consume a teaspoon twice daily during the onset of symptoms for relief. This simple yet effective remedy offers a natural way to combat seasonal illnesses,” said Dr Sachin.

While there is limited scientific research, specifically on this combination, Dr. Arora said both onions and honey have individual properties that may help alleviate symptoms.

Dr Arora told us that mixing onion juice with honey may create a syrup that can soothe a sore throat, reduce coughing, and help fight off underlying infections.

According to Dr Arora, onions contain compounds with antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties, which may help combat infections and reduce throat irritation. “Honey has antimicrobial properties, soothes the throat, and can act as a cough suppressant,” said Dr Arora.

Onions are packed with antioxidants and sulfur compounds that help reduce inflammation, break down mucus, and may even boost the immune system. “Honey, on the other hand, is a powerful antibacterial and antiviral agent known for its soothing properties,” Dr Sachin told indianexpress.com.
