Can wedge pillow help? (Source: Freepik)Incessant snoring can be bothersome, but it can also indicate underlying health issues. While long-term management of root causes is essential to prevent snoring, experts urge starting with a wedge pillow, which can help you find some relief.
Dr Haricharan G, senior consultant physician, HoD, internal medicine, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad stressed that wedge cushions can be beneficial in preventing snoring, particularly from a medical standpoint. “Snoring often occurs when the airway is partially obstructed due to relaxed throat muscles, tongue position, or nasal congestion during sleep. A wedge pillow elevates the upper body, which can improve airflow and reduce these obstructions,” said Dr Haricharan.
These are specially designed cushions with sloped surfaces supporting your upper body while you sleep.
“The basic idea is to keep your torso and head elevated and improve your airway alignment. It significantly lowers the risk of your throat muscles collapsing and blocking the airflow, a common cause of snoring,” explained Dr Samir Garde, director, the dept of pulmonology and lung transplant, Gleneagles Hospital, Parel.
However, “not everyone may find wedge a comfortable remedy” and that can negatively impact their sleeping time, added Dr Garde.
Dr Haricharan also noted that while wedge pillows may alleviate mild to moderate snoring, they are not a cure-all. “Lifestyle modifications, such as weight loss, avoiding alcohol before bed, and proper sleep hygiene, should complement the use of wedge pillows. In severe cases, medical treatments like CPAP (Continuous Positive Airway Pressure) may be necessary. Always consult with a healthcare professional for tailored advice,” said Dr Haricharan.

“The effectiveness of wedge cushions in curing snoring-related problems can vary from person to person. If you have been snoring for an extended time, instead of trying home remedies, you should consider consulting a doctor. Your doctor may examine your symptoms to determine the root cause of snoring,” said Dr. Garde.
In some cases, snoring can indicate various underlying health conditions, such as sleep apnea, obesity, or chronic nasal congestion. Neglecting this minor yet serious condition can only worsen one’s health over time.
