Kidneys,one of the most important organs of our body,serve as a natural filter of the blood making,essential to keep healthy.

Everyone is familiar with heart diseases,kinds of cancer,stroke,diabetes,high blood pressure and their outcome,but not many realize that with the change in lifestyle and food habits,kidney diseases too have increased. But,awareness about proper nutrient food and healthy eating plan needed for kidney can help in keeping it away.

There are few nutrients which if taken in right balance can reduce the chances of renal problems like food low in sodium,potassium and phosphorous etc.

Including some of the kidney friendly food in your daily diet can help you to maintain a good and healthy kidney. Some of the kidney friendly food which includes vegetables,fruits,oils and non vegetarian items are:

Vegetables

Cabbage: It is high in Vitamin K,Vitamin C and fiber which prevent or stop cancer cell growth in lung,colon,breast,prostate and ovarian cancers.

Cauliflower: High in Vitamin C and a good source of folate and fiber. It helps the liver neutralize toxic substances that could damage cell membranes and DNA.

Garlic: Helps prevent plaque on the teeth,lowers cholesterol and reduces inflammation.

Onion: A powerful antioxidant that works to reduce heart disease and is low in potassium. A good source of chromium (mineral that helps with carbohydrate,fat and protein metabolism).

Spinach: It is a rich source of Vitamin C,Vitamin A,E,K,protein etc. which again helps in keeping the kidney healthy.

Pumpkin: It is low in calorie. Its seeds can be eaten dry and a person gets relieved from painful kidney problems.

There are few root vegetables too that cures kidney problems are carrot,radish,etc.

Fruits

Apple: Apples have been known to reduce cholesterol and prevent constipation. Good for the kidneys because they reduce cholesterol level in the blood.

Cranberries: They contain proanthocyanidin,which is an antioxidant that will help flush out toxins that may be in the kidneys.

Watermelon,Cucumber,Mangoes are few other fruits which help in curing kidneys diseases.

Pineapple: It contains calcium,potassium,fiber and Vitamin C. It is low in fat and cholesterol and cure kidney stone.

Pomegranate: It is very low in saturated fat,cholesterol and sodium. It is also a good source of dietary fiber and folate,and a very good source of Vitamin C and Vitamin K.

NON- VEGETARIAN

Egg Whites: Egg whites are pure protein and provide the highest quality of protein with all the essential amino acids. For the kidney diet,egg whites provide protein with less phosphorus than other protein sources such as egg yolk or meats.

Fish: Provides high-quality protein and contains anti-inflammatory fats called omega-3s. It helps lowering LDL cholesterol,which is bad cholesterol,and raise HDL cholesterol,which is good cholesterol.

Meat: Although rich in phosphorous but needed in diet due to protein content.

OILS

Olive oil: It is a great source of oleic acid,an anti-inflammatory fatty acid. The mono unsaturated fat in olive oil protects against oxidation.

Virgin Coconut oil: It not only prevents developing a liver and kidney disorder,it can also heal and restore its good condition. Because of its detoxifying effect,it improves the function of the liver and kidney and helps in eliminating buildup of unwanted elements in the body.

MILK

A total calcium intake of 1,200 mg/day,of which 800 mg should come from milk and dairy products,is thus recommended.

SALT

It is a good preservative and thus is present in excess in canned foods and packed items. It is therefore better to choose fresh food over preserved food items. Sodium is important as it leads to increase in urinary volume.

SWEETS

Excessive consumption of foods rich in sugar increases the urinary excretion of calcium. Probably more important,however,is the fact that chocolate,pralines and products containing cocoa have high oxalate content.

For many years medical science have suggested the use of dry fruits pistachio,almonds and chilgoja to tone up weak kidneys. Also,coconut water is very efficacious in urinary troubles.
