Many people swear by haldi doodh, or turmeric milk with a pinch of pepper powder, to get relief from colds, coughs, and certain seasonal illnesses. It is usually consumed scalding hot for better benefits, but nutritionist Gurbaj Singh recently claimed that turmeric milk should always be had at room temperature or just warm enough as it otherwise affects the gut.

Is there any truth to this claim?

Before we understand the right way to have it, let’s find out about the purported benefits.

As a potent anti-inflammatory, curcumin — the central element in turmeric — helps lower inflammation and may help treat illnesses including arthritis and digestive issues, said dietitian Vidhi Chawla, founder, Fisico Diet and Aesthetic Clinic. “Additionally, it contains a lot of antioxidants, which improve immunity and may lower the chance of developing several chronic diseases,” said Chawla.

Should you have turmeric milk at room temperature?

Chawla mentioned having turmeric milk at room temperature preserves some of the health benefits of both milk and turmeric.

Overheating milk can cause some of its natural elements, like proteins and vitamins, to degrade. Furthermore, continuous exposure to extremely high temperatures may reduce the effectiveness of curcumin. Although it is rather heat-stable, prolonged cooking or heating can cause a minor deterioration that lowers its therapeutic effectiveness. Without sacrificing nutrients, room-temperature turmeric milk maximises curcumin’s anti-inflammatory and immune-stimulating benefits,” said Chawla.

Additionally, you run the danger of burning your tongue or throat when you drink hot turmeric milk, which can be uncomfortable and irritating, especially for people with sensitive stomachs, said Chawla.

Generally speaking, the warmth of room-temperature turmeric milk is pleasant, relieving sore throats and promoting relaxation without running the risk of overheating or losing nutrients.

Turmeric milk can be a calming and health-promoting beverage, but it may have more health advantages when it is kept at room temperature or is slowly heated. This method lets you take full advantage of turmeric’s benefits while preserving the minerals in milk. For a healthier, more advantageous cup of turmeric milk, think about omitting the high heat the next time you make it,” said Chawla.
