Tadgola or ice apple is basically the fleshy and juicy fruit of the sugar palm tree. “With a texture similar to litchi, it is translucent and pale white in colour. Its unique feature is that even the sap of the trunk is healthy and refreshing. Also, the sap collected early morning is sweet and sugary in taste while that collected in the afternoon or evening is fermented and sour and astringent to taste,” said Garima Goyal, a registered dietitian.

Ushakiran Sisodia, registered dietician and clinical nutritionist, Nanavati Max Super Speciality Hospital, Mumbai said that tadgola is “low in calories and contains a good amount of vitamins and minerals”. “It is rich in B-vitamins, particularly vitamin B2 (riboflavin) and vitamin B3 (niacin). It also contains other nutrients like iron, calcium, potassium, and phosphorus,” Sisodia told indianexpress.com.

When should you have tadgola?

*For body temperature regulation: This fruit is a natural coolant for the body and helps to maintain the body temperature during summer.
*For preventing summer-related illnesses: Rich in sodium and potassium, it helps maintain the fluid and electrolyte balance. It also helps to deal with dehydration, fatigue, and summer-related illnesses such as heat exhaustion or heat stroke.
*For weight loss: Full of fibre and water, it has a lower caloric density. Both these features help to lose weight as it keeps the person fuller for a longer duration.
*For treating constipation: It’s high fibre and water content helps in smooth bowel movement and deal with constipation.
*For immunity-boosting: The richness of vitamin C in this fruit enhances the body’s immunity and keeps infections at bay.
*For healthy skin: The vitamin C content helps to synthesise collagen, a protein that forms the form and structure of the skin.

Sisodia added that ice apple helps in cooling the body during summers, aid digestion, and provide hydration due to its high water content. “It is also beneficial for skin health. Like most fruits, it is best enjoyed fresh,” said Sisodia.

While the summer fruit has many benefits, it will be “inappropriate to say that one should only have this fruit for issues like constipation, acidity, uneven skin tanning or dealing with irritability because many other foods are available that offer the same health benefits,” Goyal pointed out. “But in general, it’s a great hydrating fruit, especially for the summers, and also helps to deal with electrolyte imbalances in this weather,” she signed off.
