Agreeing with the hack, Haripriya. N, executive nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Chennai, T Nagar, said that one should keep the coconut away from ethylene-producing fruits (like bananas and apples) that can accelerate ripening and spoilage. “Store in a dry environment to prevent mold growth,” suggested Haripriya.

Culinary uses

Fresh coconut: Ideal for smoothies, raw desserts, salads, and tropical dishes. The meat is softer and easier to blend or chew, said Haripriya.

Dry coconut: Suited for baking, cooking, and making coconut oil or milk. “It has a more intense flavour and longer shelf life, making it versatile for various recipes,” shared Haripriya.

Storing Coconut Water

Refrigeration: Fresh coconut water should be consumed within 24-48 hours. “For longer storage, refrigerate it immediately in an airtight container, which can preserve it for up to a week,” said Haripriya.

Freezing: For extended storage, freeze coconut water in ice cube trays or freezer-safe containers. It can last for several months in the freezer.

Why it works: Both refrigeration and freezing slow down microbial growth and enzymatic activity that causes spoilage, shared Haripriya.

Considerations:

*Always use clean, airtight containers to prevent contamination.

*Label containers with dates to keep track of freshness.

Storing Coconut Meat

Refrigeration: Fresh coconut meat can be stored in the refrigerator for up to a week. Place the meat in an airtight container to prevent it from drying out.

Freezing: Coconut meat can be frozen to extend its shelf life to 6-8 months. Shred or chop the meat and store it in freezer bags or airtight containers.

Why it works: Refrigeration slows down spoilage, while freezing halts it almost entirely, preserving texture and flavour.

Considerations:

*Ensure the coconut meat is dry before storage to prevent ice crystal formation, which can affect texture.
*Label and date the storage containers.
