Yoghurt, a versatile and nutritious food with various consumption possibilities, prompts a decision between plain and flavoured options. This choice hinges on factors such as dietary objectives, taste inclinations, and health considerations. Let’s explore the advantages and disadvantages of each yoghurt variety to make a well-informed choice.

According to dietitian Ruchita Batra, plain yoghurt is preferred over flavoured ones due to the lack of added sugar. “Unfortunately, artificial sweeteners may not be any healthier than real sugar. And eating super-sweet artificial sweeteners can set up your taste buds to crave more sweet stuff throughout the day. Your best bet is to avoid flavoured yoghurt and reach for the plain variety,” said Batra in a post on Instagram.

Batra elucidated that added sugars in ‘healthy flavoured yoghurt’ can increase the chances of various health conditions including obesity, heart disease, and diabetes. “Patients suffering from diabetes are strictly advised against consuming sugar-sweetened food items,” said Batra.

So, how do we make the choice?

The choice between plain and flavoured yoghurt boils down to individual requisites and inclinations. “If priority is accorded to curbing sugar intake, fostering culinary creativity, and embracing a more natural orientation, plain yoghurt takes precedence,” said Dt Ashish Rani, assistant manager, dietetics, Aakash Healthcare, New Delhi.

Conversely, for those seeking convenience, sweet flavour profiles, or catering to the tastes of children, flavoured yoghurt stands out as a delectable and convenient alternative, added Ashish. “Striking a harmonious balance between yoghurt selections and a well-rounded diet remains pivotal to savouring the manifold health benefits while gratifying your palate,” mentioned Ashish while listing the differences between the two.

Plain yoghurt

Low sugar content: Plain yoghurt typically boasts minimal or no added sugar, rendering it preferable for individuals striving to curtail sugar intake, especially those with diabetes or a preference for a low-sugar diet.

Versatility: Plain yoghurt acts as a blank canvas for culinary innovation. You have the liberty to tailor it to your liking by incorporating fresh fruits, honey, nuts, or granola. “Its adaptability extends across sweet and savoury preparations, spanning from smoothies to salad dressings,” said Ashish.

Probiotics: Numerous plain yoghurts feature live probiotic cultures that can be advantageous for digestive health and fostering a balanced gut microbiome. These probiotics lend support to your immune system and enhance nutrient absorption.

Caloric advantage: Plain yoghurt usually registers fewer calories compared to its flavoured counterparts, positioning it as an excellent option for calorie-conscious individuals who still desire the perks of yoghurt consumption.

Minimal artificial additives: Plain yoghurt predominantly lacks the artificial colours, flavours, and additives commonly detected in flavoured alternatives. This assures a more wholesome and natural choice, Ashish described.

Flavoured yoghurt

Flavour appeal: Flavored yoghurts span a wide spectrum of delectable flavours, making them the go-to preference for those who savour a sweeter, fruitier taste. “They offer a convenient avenue to satiate sweet cravings,” Ashish mentioned.

Convenience: Flavoured yoghurts are ready for consumption directly from the container, necessitating no supplementary toppings or mix-ins. “This characteristic renders them a swift and fuss-free snack option,” mentioned Ashish.

What to keep in mind?

“Despite their appealing taste, flavoured yoghurts often incorporate added sugars, potentially culminating in excessive calorie ingestion and health concerns. Therefore, prudent examination of nutrition labels is advised, with preference given to options boasting lower sugar content,” cautioned Ashish.
