Kusha Kapila swears by a home remedy for instant stomach pain relief.
“When you have really bad stomach ache, onion juice works wonders. I have been having it since I was a kid. It instantly fixes it. My mother has been giving it to me since I was a kid,” Kapila said during a conversation with Mira Kapoor, Neetu Kapoor, and Athiya Shetty.
According to Kapila, one must juice the onion, strain the pulp, and “have a shot of it. Not more.”
Intrigued, we contacted an expert to understand its effectiveness.
Dr Maneendra, consultant and HOD critical care department, Gleneagles Hospitals, Lakdi Ka Pul, Hyderabad, said that onion juice has long been considered a home remedy for various ailments, including stomach aches. “The rationale behind its use lies in its natural compounds like sulfur, flavonoids, and antioxidants, which are thought to possess anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties. These could theoretically help alleviate certain types of tummy discomfort caused by indigestion or mild gastrointestinal infections,” said Dr Maneendra.
However, he pointed out that scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of onion juice for stomachaches is limited. “In fact, for individuals with sensitive stomachs or conditions like acid reflux, consuming raw onion juice might exacerbate symptoms, causing heartburn or irritation,” said Dr Maneendra.
It’s important to identify the root cause of the stomach ache — whether it stems from gas, bloating, infection, or a more serious issue — before relying on such remedies. “Ensure you stick to tried-and-tested treatments for stomach pain such as hydration, rest, and over-the-counter medications if needed,” said Dr Maneendra.

For persistent or severe symptoms, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to avoid potential complications. “While onion juice may offer minor relief for some, it should not replace medically approved solutions for stomach discomfort,” said Dr Maneendra.
