A glass of warm honey-lemon water is often promoted as a magic potion for weight loss. Many believe starting the day with this drink can boost metabolism, burn fat, and cleanse the body.

Businessman Harsh Goenka recently poked fun at this popular trend, joking that after two months of drinking honey-lemon water, the only weight he lost was that of the ingredients. In a post shared on X, the RPG Group Chairman wrote: “I was told that if you drink lemon juice with honey every morning for two months, you will lose 2 kg weight. After two month,s I had lost 2 kg lemons and 3 kg honey.”

The post quickly became viral, with many X users eagerly weighing in on his statement. One user wrote, “It is a marketing trick by lemon and honey vendors.” Another chimed in, “As per my understanding, to lose weight only honey in lukewarm water daily no lemon, it breaks down fat stored in the body and body utilises the fat as energy.” A third user suggested, “Put chia seeds as well and drink lukewarm. Is good for gut.”

This raises an important question — does this widely followed ritual help with weight loss, or is it just another internet myth?

Kanikka Malhotra, consultant dietician and certified diabetes educator tells indianexpress.com, “Drinking honey-lemon water in the morning can support weight loss, aid digestion, and promote hydration. Replacing high-calorie drinks with honey-lemon water can reduce overall calorie intake, potentially leading to weight loss. Increased water intake can boost metabolism and create a feeling of fullness, which helps shed pounds.”

Lemon’s vitamin C and honey’s antioxidants contribute to overall health, adds Malhotra, while the drink supports healthy digestion. “Lemon juice encourages the production of digestive juices, and honey acts as a prebiotic, supporting beneficial gut flora. Moreover, the drink’s hydrating properties can prevent constipation and promote regular bowel movements.”

Honey-lemon water can be a healthier alternative to starting the day with tea on an empty stomach, a common practice in India, notes the expert. Unlike tea, which can sometimes cause acidity or digestive discomfort when consumed on an empty stomach, honey-lemon water is known for its digestion-aiding properties and gentle impact on the stomach. It may also help detoxify the body, improve skin health, and boost energy levels.

Malhotra stresses, “While honey-lemon water isn’t a miracle solution for weight loss, it can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet and exercise routine. It is crucial to consume honey in moderation to avoid excess sugar intake.”

Are there any metabolic benefits of consuming honey and lemon together, or is weight loss more about overall diet and lifestyle?

Malhotra states that consuming honey and lemon together may offer metabolic benefits, but weight loss primarily hinges on overall diet and lifestyle. “Honey can reduce blood sugar levels and prevent excessive weight gain. Lemon aids digestion and helps in detoxification. Lemon-honey juice fasting may reduce body weight and BMI.”

Lemon flavonoids decrease cholesterol and triglyceride production, she adds. Drinking honey lemon water can also boost metabolism and help you feel full, which can help with weight management. While honey-lemon water isn’t a miracle solution for weight loss, it can be a valuable addition to a balanced diet and exercise routine.

Weight loss is more about overall energy balance. Instead of relying on these drinks, focus on a sustainable approach, stresses the expert. “This includes a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Staying hydrated is important, but follow your body’s thirst cues rather than adhering to a rigid ‘8 glasses a day’ rule.”
