Let's understand about adulteration in ketchups (Source: Freepik)Adulteration of food items has become quite common these days, highlighting the importance of choosing authentic products. After learning about fake ORS, fake garlic, and analogue paneer, it’s time to test tomato ketchup, a commonly used condiment in many households.
Dr Veena Pai, dietitian, Lilavati Hospital Mumbai said fake or adulterated ketchup might contain a range of ingredients that are not good for your body and can result in various health complications.
According to Dr Pai, fake ketchup often contains harmful food colourings, synthetic dyes, artificial flavours, preservatives, and chemicals. “When consumed frequently, it can pose several threats to your physical well-being. You may fall ill and experience health issues like indigestion, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, dysentery, and food poisoning,” said Dr Pai.
To determine whether the tomato ketchup you are using is fake or real, add one tablespoon to a glass of water.
“If the ketchup does not turn the water red quickly, then it is the real one. The fake ones may make the water red quickly and dissolve,” explained Dr Pai.

Ensure you always read the ingredients list on the packaging before buying a product.
“Avoid putting random ketchup in your grocery bag, choose wisely, and make informed decisions. Do not buy ketchup or any food product from localised or non-certified brands. Always go for known and trustworthy brands that maintain standardised quality regarding food products,” said Dr Pai.
