We have covered various aviation topics, from why you must keep seats upright and the window shades up while landing and takeoff to why you may have heard a distinct barking sound before takeoff. In that thread, we decided to pose another question on our minds: Do airlines serve leftover drinks and snacks, or do they serve fresh drinks and snacks to passengers on board every single time?
Colonel Rajgopalan, founder of Aviation Training India, told us that these policies vary widely from airline to airline. “There are no international rules for this. The health and safety of passengers should be paramount,” said Rajgopalan.
According to him, airlines generally do not serve leftover alcohol or food due to health and safety regulations and quality control. “Airlines typically serve fresh, unopened alcoholic beverages to passengers. This ensures the quality and safety of the product,” said Rajgopalan.
Like alcohol, food served on flights is usually prepared and packaged specifically for the flight to maintain freshness and safety standards. According to him, leftovers are generally discarded. “It’s important to note that specific airline policies may vary, and passengers can always inquire directly with the airline for clarification on their practices,” said Rajgopalan.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), most germs require a damp environment to grow, so dry foods, such as potato chips, are usually safe. “Additionally, food in factory-sealed containers, such as canned tuna or packaged crackers, is usually safe if they were not been opened or handled by another person,” it reads.
CDC mentions that travellers should exercise the same caution about food and water served on flights as they do for restaurants.
