Aly Goni, who has been working on his fitness, has taken the diet-first approach. As such, he took his fans and followers through his morning routine, sharing that he starts his day with a cup of coffee with shilajit, also called Asphaltum or moomiyo. “First things first, I wake up in the morning and have coffee with shilajit. This is the first thing I do. Every morning, I start my day with this drink. Uff,” he exclaimed in the video while having the drink.

Adding that he has his meals as per his trainer’s planning and advice, Goni said he eats avocado and 5-6 boiled eggs for breakfast to get good fats and protein. He also takes his supplements like vitamin C and fish oil. For lunch, he eats air-fried chicken, a full bowl of vegetables, Shiitake Japanese rice, curd, and dal.

Taking a cue from his candid confession, let’s understand whether it is advisable to have coffee with shilajit.

Coffee is generally fine for most healthy adults when consumed in moderation. Shilajit is a natural resin known for its mineral content. However, mixing the two every morning isn’t strongly supported by nutrition science, said Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane.

Caffeine is a stimulant, while shilajit has adaptogenic properties, and combining them may not provide any extra benefit. For some people, this mix can irritate the stomach or increase acidity,” elaborated Sheikh.

Shilajit may help improve energy levels because it contains fulvic acid and trace minerals, but these benefits do not increase when combined with coffee. said Sheikh.

“Coffee already stimulates the nervous system, so the combination may feel energising, but that effect comes mostly from caffeine, not shilajit. No evidence that taking them together boosts metabolism beyond what coffee does,” elucidated Sheikh.

Is it safe for everyone to try mixing the two?

Not necessarily, contended Sheikh. “People with acidity, gastritis, high blood pressure, anxiety, irregular heart rhythms, or sleep issues should be cautious. Coffee can make these conditions worse, and adding shilajit may increase discomfort. Pregnant and breastfeeding women should avoid shilajit altogether. Anyone on medication should consult a doctor before using it regularly,” said Sheikh.

If not with coffee, then how should shilajit be had?

If someone wishes to try shilajit for general wellness, the safest option is to mix a pea-sized amount in warm water or milk, said Sheikh. “Keep intake limited and avoid pairing it with stimulants like coffee or energy drinks,” added Sheikh.

What to note?

Trying online trends is tempting, but dietary choices should be personalised, cautioned Sheikh. “Occasional use may be fine for some people, but making coffee with shilajit a daily habit isn’t necessary or safe for everyone. Listen to your body, check product quality, and when in doubt, consult a nutrition expert,” said Sheikh.
