When you eat chips, you consume a snack typically high in refined carbohydrates, which can spike your blood sugar levels.

Agreed Shruti K Bhardwaj, chief dietician at Zydus Hospital, Ahmedabad who explained that the kind of sugar found in chips is often added during processing, contributing to their addictive taste. “Additionally, chips tend to be high in sodium, which can lead to increased blood pressure and water retention,” Bhardwaj told indianexpress.com.

The amount of added sugar in a packet of chips can vary depending on the brand and flavour. “Generally, traditional potato chips don’t contain added sugar unless they’re flavoured varieties, such as barbecue or sweet chilli, which might have added sugars in their seasoning blends,” said Abhilasha V chief clinical nutritionist, Cloudnine Group of Hospitals, Bengaluru.

Eating chips occasionally isn’t inherently harmful, but regular consumption can pose risks. Excessive intake of refined carbohydrates and added sugars may contribute to weight gain, insulin resistance, and an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. The high sodium content in chips can also be problematic for individuals with hypertension or heart disease.

When it comes to understanding the sugar content in chips and its effects on health, Abhilasha listed down some key points to consider:

Amount and type of sugar

Chips typically don’t contain significant amounts of sugar unless they are flavoured varieties.

How to know if your favourite packet of chips has any added sugar?

To find out the exact amount of added sugar in a specific brand or flavour of chips, you can check the nutrition label on the packaging. “Look for the sugars under the Total Carbohydrates section. This will indicate how much sugar content is from added sugars. Keep in mind that not all chips will have added sugars, especially plain varieties,” said Abhilasha.

Things to keep in mind

The effects of consuming chips on children and pregnant mothers can be “particularly significant due to their nutritional impact and potential health risks“, mentioned Abhilasha.

To enjoy chips more mindfully, consider portion control and opt for baked or air-popped varieties when possible. “Reading nutrition labels can help you make informed choices, paying attention to serving sizes and ingredients. Pairing chips with healthier options like vegetables or lean protein can help balance out your snack,” added Bhardwaj.

Ultimately, moderation is key. Enjoying chips as an occasional treat within a balanced diet is unlikely to cause significant harm. However, consistently overindulging in them may lead to adverse health effects over time.
