Jacqueline Fernandez recently demonstrated her favourite fitness practices at 40, emphasising that she has trained with weights a lot more this year. “Honestly, I am making a conscious effort to definitely do more weights, especially this year as I turn 40. Here comes the weights. They are the most important thing. They are actually anti-ageing. I know a lot of people are going to laugh at me for saying it, but it’s really important to start weights at any age, especially when you are getting older. This is something you really need,” the actor, who can be seen doing combination of Surya Namaskar and weights, told CurlyTales x Mashable India.

But why should you lift weights?

Dr Amit Saraf, director, internal medicine, Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, said that the body naturally loses bone density and muscle with age. “Lifting weights slows down the deterioration of muscles, helps with posture, and overall strength of the body. It keeps your body toned, energetic, and strong with every passing year,” said Dr Saraf.

As we age, Dr Saraf said that muscles can atrophy, our metabolism may slow, and bones become more prone to fractures, which could lead to fatigue, weight gain, or injury. “Strength training can help reverse the loss of muscle mass, be a useful tool in maintaining joint stability, and can improve balance and coordination,” he told indianexpress.com.

Does it help with anti-ageing?

Weight training is more than just an exercise program. According to Dr Saraf, it is a natural way to support the body through later years of life, particularly in terms of muscle strength, bone density, and energy. “When implemented consistently and over time, it will, in most instances, make a person stronger, move better, and have a healthier, more vibrant feel. Thus, it is a simple yet effective approach to healthy ageing,” said Dr Saraf.

Can everyone train with weights?

Weight training programs can be tailored to suit every fitness level. Dr Saraf said that the goal is to start in small steps with proper form while gradually increasing resistance. “This makes it great for beginners as well as people who have some experience, making it a universal way of remaining active at any age,” said Dr Saraf.

Are there additional advantages beyond muscle and bone health?

Yes, affirmed Dr Saraf. “Resistance training can improve energy levels, assist with metabolism, and facilitate healthy weights. It elevates mood, reduces stress, and promotes good sleep. Many enjoy additional confidence and desire to feel strong far beyond their looks, coming into the gym and after lifting,” said Dr Saraf.
