Debina Bonnerjee recently opened up about choosing to colour her grey hair while admitting that she is not shy of embracing the natural process of ageing. “Ageing is inevitable, and I embrace that wholeheartedly. But while some things are beyond my control, there’s comfort in knowing that certain aspects of life are in my hands. Colouring my greys is one of those choices. It’s not about hiding age — it’s about owning how I show up in life, just like working out to feel stronger and more energetic. It’s a small act that makes me feel vibrant and in control,” Bonnerjee wrote on her Instagram Stories.

She said that seeing herself “without streaks of grey gives me an instant boost.” “There’s comfort in looking in the mirror and feeling polished, put together, and energetic. It’s not about rejecting age but choosing how I want to feel. For me, it’s about showing up with intention – confident in my choices, feeling radiant in my own skin. There’s beauty in accepting what life brings, but there’s also beauty in taking charge of what you can. Colouring my greys isn’t about fighting time — it’s about celebrating life on my own terms. And that’s a powerful way to feel more alive every day,” Bonnerjee, 41, added.

Her admission is a powerful reminder of how one doesn’t need to be embarrassed about colouring their grey hair.

Dr Sonal Anand, psychiatrist, Wockhardt Hospitals Mira Road, said that grey hair is often associated with being old. “There’s constant societal pressure on women to always look youthful irrespective of their age. In this race of looking young and beautiful, most women deny having grey hair and colour it immediately. Most women avoid going to social gatherings or events for fear of being judged. Your beauty and youthfulness come from within and not from how much grey hair you have. Just like men don’t feel ashamed in flaunting their grey hair, women too shouldn’t,” said Dr Anand.

Clinical psychologist Divya Ratan agreed and shared that for people, colouring their grey hair is a matter of choice if it makes them feel confident about themselves.

“It has nothing to do with looking young or ageing. If they feel mature, confident, and have an elevated sense of command, it is a good way to embrace their selves. One shouldn’t feel embarrassed about opting for any kind of such treatment,” said Ratan.

Dr Anand said it’s almost similar to choosing the best makeup or outfits to look and feel good. “It’s a form of self-expression. People should understand you can still be bubbly and slay that salt-and-pepper look. Whether to hide or flaunt, the choice is completely yours,” said Dr Anand.
