Vir Das with his Emmys trophy (Source: Vir Das/Instagram)In a year already marked by Indian achievements on the global stage — from the first Indian film, All We Imagine As Light, winning the Grand Prix at Cannes to the country shining at the Paralympics, Vir Das is set to make history again. The acclaimed actor-comedian will become the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards in November.
To celebrate this momentous occasion, Vir Das is seeking to showcase Indian talent on the international stage. He has taken to Instagram to call for emerging Indian designers, from fashion students to small homegrown labels, to create a custom outfit for him to wear at the awards ceremony.
His post on Instagram read, “Alright folks. I’m going to be the first Indian to host the International Emmy Awards. I’m going to wear something Indian from home. I’m also not going to wear a fancy designer. They have enough cash and clients. So we’re gonna launch someone new. So if you’re a budding designer, label, student, and you can put together super formal stuff. Send us an email at contact@zazuproduction.com(sic).”
“I would attach details on your stuff and experience please. We get a lot of emails. I want to be clear. This is super duper ultra formal wear at a very high level for a very large audience. You have to make me look good in formal wear which is a task I assure you :-) It HAS TO BE INDIAN OR INDO-WESTERN FUSION. I do not need a tuxedo. We will pay you for your work, pay for the outfit and credit you. You will have to work with my team to get the vision and design right. Cheers, V (sic),” he added.
Expressing his desire to wear “something Indian from home,” Das is inviting designers to submit their traditional Indian or Indo-Western designs. This initiative provides a unique opportunity for aspiring designers to showcase their work on a global platform and contribute to India’s growing influence in the fashion world.

While the announcement of Das hosting the Emmys has thrilled his fans, the comic remains focused on the task. “I’m very grateful. It’s a big opportunity, something an Indian has never done before. The journey from nominee to winner to host is insane,” he told Elle India in an interview. “I have a job to do. I’ll celebrate once I get the job done right. Because there’s a fair amount of expectations, I want to do a really good job.”
As for his outfit, Das’s commitment to supporting local talent is commendable. This isn’t the first time he has sought out emerging designers to showcase their work. In 2022, he specifically called for designers not yet established to style him for one of his stand-up shows. He set clear criteria, expressing a preference for a student or someone creating something entirely new.
While renowned Indian designers like Gaurav Gupta and Rahul Mishra have been making waves on the global fashion scene, it’s crucial to champion emerging talents who often get overlooked. By doing so, we bring to light some of the most stunning designs and recognise the incredible skills of these individuals, like Das is doing.

The recent viral sensation of Nancy Tyagi’s self-designed Cannes outfit proves the power of supporting emerging talent. Ananya Panday, fresh off the success of her show ‘Call Me Bae,’ which also starred Das, had Tyagi design a dress for her too.
